My PhD research is studying the diversity of fungi in theAmazon Rainforests of Ecuador and investigating the ecological role of fungi in nutrient recycling. I am currently working with Ecuadorian partners within Yasuní National Park to describe the diversity of Xylariacious ascomycetes and uncover the reasons for their ecological dominance in this ecosystem. Expeditions to Yasuní have provided hundreds of fungi to work with and my goals are to better understand the phylogeny of western Amazonian Xylaria, describe the unknown taxa, and discover links between the endophytic and saprobic Xylaria.
